I Gave an AI $1,000 to Swing Trade โ Here's Day 1
By FinanceFox Team ยท 10 min read
What happens when you give an AI system $1,000 and tell it to swing trade stocks?
We decided to find out.
This isn't a hypothetical. This isn't a backtest. **We built an AI trading system called FoxTrader, funded it with $1,000 in a paper trading account, and let it start making real trade decisions.**
This is the first entry in what will be an ongoing series documenting every trade, every win, every loss, and every lesson learned.
## Why We're Doing This
There's no shortage of people online claiming their "AI trading bot" makes thousands per day. Most of them are selling courses, not showing receipts.
We wanted to take a different approach:
- **Full transparency** โ every trade documented with entry, exit, thesis, and P&L
- **Real system** โ not manual picks labeled as "AI." FoxTrader actually scans the market, computes technical indicators, and identifies setups algorithmically
- **Starting small** โ $1,000 is real enough to matter but small enough to learn from mistakes
- **Educational** โ we'll explain every decision so you can learn alongside us
## What FoxTrader Actually Does
FoxTrader is a Python-based trading system that:
1. **Scans 70+ stocks** across every sector โ tech, finance, healthcare, energy, crypto-adjacent, you name it
2. **Computes 15+ technical indicators** โ RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, ATR, ADX, Stochastic, moving averages, volume analysis
3. **Detects 9 swing trade patterns** โ including pullbacks to support, oversold bounces, breakout setups, volume surges, and EMA crossovers
4. **Scores and ranks** every opportunity by strength, risk/reward ratio, and trend alignment
5. **Executes bracket orders** โ every trade has an automatic stop loss (to limit downside) and take profit (to lock in gains)
The AI doesn't just spit out "buy" or "sell." It writes a thesis explaining *why* each trade makes sense. That's the part we think is most valuable โ not blind signals, but reasoned analysis.
## The Rules
Before we started trading, we set strict rules:
| Rule | Detail |
|------|--------|
| **Total Capital** | $1,000 |
| **Max Per Trade** | $250 (25% of capital) |
| **Max Risk Per Trade** | $25 (2.5% of capital) |
| **Stop Loss** | Required on every trade (ATR-based) |
| **Take Profit** | Required on every trade |
| **Min Risk:Reward** | 2:1 |
| **Max Positions** | 4 simultaneous |
| **Hold Period** | 2-10 trading days |
No exceptions. No "let me just hold a little longer." The bracket orders enforce discipline automatically.
## Day 1: The First Scan
On May 4, 2026, FoxTrader ran its first market scan. Here's what it found:
The scanner identified **5 swing trade setups** across 33 symbols (we've since expanded to 70+). All five were "Pullback to Rising SMA20" patterns โ stocks in uptrends that had pulled back to their 20-day moving average support.
The strongest signals were concentrated in the financial sector: **BAC, JPM, GS, and XLF** all showed the same pattern simultaneously. When multiple stocks in the same sector flash the same signal, it increases conviction โ the sector itself is showing strength.
## The First Trades
Based on the scan results, FoxTrader selected three positions:
### Trade 1: BAC (Bank of America) โ 4 shares @ $52.19
**Why:** Strongest risk/reward of the bunch at 3.38:1. Price pulled back to its rising 20-day SMA with the 50-day SMA confirming the uptrend. ADX at 24.9 showed moderate trend strength.
- **Entry:** $52.19
- **Stop Loss:** $51.17 (2ร ATR below entry)
- **Take Profit:** $55.65 (3ร ATR above entry)
- **Risk:** $4.08 total | **Reward:** $13.84 total
### Trade 2: JPM (JPMorgan Chase) โ 1 share @ $307.15
**Why:** Second-best R:R at 2.99:1. Same thesis as BAC โ financial sector pullback to support. JPM is a blue-chip name with massive institutional ownership, which means it tends to respect technical levels.
- **Entry:** $307.15
- **Stop Loss:** $301.18
- **Take Profit:** $325.36
- **Risk:** $5.97 | **Reward:** $18.21
### Trade 3: NVDA (Nvidia) โ 1 share @ $198.51
**Why:** Added later in the day to diversify into the tech sector. Same pullback-to-SMA20 setup. NVDA has been a momentum leader all year, and buying dips in leaders is a core swing trading principle.
- **Entry:** $198.51
- **Stop Loss:** $188.68
- **Take Profit:** $215.63
- **Risk:** $9.83 | **Reward:** $17.12
## Day 1 P&L
| Position | Entry | Close (Day 1) | P&L | Status |
|----------|-------|---------------|-----|--------|
| BAC ร 4 | $52.19 | $52.20 | +$0.04 | ๐ข Open |
| JPM ร 1 | $307.15 | $307.71 | +$0.56 | ๐ข Open |
| NVDA ร 1 | $198.51 | $197.75 | -$0.76 | ๐ด Open |
| **Total** | | | **-$0.16** | |
Essentially flat on day one. That's completely expected โ swing trades need days to develop. The positions are set, the bracket orders are managing risk automatically, and we wait.
**Capital deployed:** $714.91 (71.5%)
**Cash reserve:** $285.09 (28.5%)
**Maximum risk if ALL trades hit stop loss:** $19.88 (2% of capital)
## What's Next
FoxTrader runs automatically every trading day:
- **9:30 AM ET:** Full market scan across 70+ stocks, plus an options scanner for leveraged plays
- **4x daily during market hours:** Position monitoring with automatic redeployment when trades close
When BAC, JPM, or NVDA hit their targets (or stops), FoxTrader will immediately scan for the next best setup and redeploy the capital. The goal is to keep the money working.
We're also building an options trading module that will run alongside the stock positions with a separate $1,000 allocation. Options offer leveraged exposure to the same setups โ higher risk, but dramatically higher potential returns.
**Follow along.** We'll publish weekly updates with every trade, the full P&L, and everything we're learning about AI-assisted swing trading. No cherry-picking, no hiding losses. Just the raw truth of what happens when you let an AI manage money.
